Matthews

Matthews is a town in Mecklenburg County, southeast of Charlotte, built around a historic downtown on Trade Street. It is one of the few Charlotte suburbs where “downtown” means a real walkable main street, with a Saturday-morning farmers market and local shops and restaurants.

Housing: the median sale price was $500,000 in September 2026 (69 closed sales), and $520,000 year-to-date through September 2026, per the Canopy Realtor Association. That is down from $561,000 in September 2025. Months’ supply stood at 3.0.

Taxes: for fiscal year 2026-27 (effective July 1, 2026), the Town rate is 27.95 cents per $100 of assessed value and the Mecklenburg County rate is 49.27 cents, for a combined 77.22 cents per $100.

Getting around: the main route to Uptown is Independence Boulevard (US-74). CATS serves Matthews with bus routes 17 (Commonwealth Avenue, from the Matthews Park & Ride to the Charlotte Transportation Center), 27 (Monroe Road / John Street), and the 64X Matthews express, plus CATS Micro zones serving downtown Matthews, CPCC Levine, and Windsor Square.

Parks and outdoors: Four Mile Creek Greenway, Squirrel Lake Park, and Stumptown Park.

Schools: students are assigned by home address through Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools; use the district’s official assignment lookup linked in the facts box.

Good for (editorial): buyers who want a walkable historic downtown with a real main street and quick Uptown access via US-74.

Not for (editorial): buyers chasing the lowest taxes in the region — the combined 77.22-cent rate runs higher than nearby Union County towns — or buyers who want a new-build master-planned community; Matthews’ housing stock is older and more varied.
